Tech Day Content Ideas

Filed under: Instruction, Ref Meetings, Reference sources, Technology, Faculty — Sharon @ 9:22 pm

Please place a comment below indicating any ideas you have for topics for individual sessions at our tech day over break.  These don’t have to be ones the library would do - also include ideas for ones that the Computer Center or OIT or visiting speakers might do - any ideas for content, you don’t have to have a presenter in mind.

  1. Sharon’s Suggestions (Same as in email)

Incorporating YouTube and other video clips into classroom lectures and discussions

Using Clicker technology to survey or receive instant feedback from students during a lecture or discussion

Using ArtStor in a course : Collect images for an in-class slide show, create a collection of images that students would use for an assignment, identify and select images to download into a course power point presentation, etc.

Accessing Online Full Text Journal Articles at Knox

Incorporating Online Library Resources into Moodle – Searching the library catalog and databases directly from a Moodle page, linking to Online FT articles in Moodle, Providing RSS feeds with headlines or articles titles from publications Knox subscribes to online, etc.

Working with Digital Images – How to find or create them, how to collect & organize them, how to incorporate them into websites, moodle pages, Power Point presentations, etc.

    Using RefWorks

Discovering & using the library’s vast collection of Online Reference Works

Setting Up & Using Moodle for a course

Selecting Materials for the library – How to use the library’s online resources to identify books or films that are most appropriate to be added to the library’s collections in a department’s subject area

Tips and Tricks for Transitioning to Microsoft Office 2007

  2. Ross and Nancy don’t want to do anything with Office 2007 because they think the transition is pretty much complete. Topics they are mulling over:

preparing your machine for the network (Bradford, Sophos)
how to buy a computer: what features to look for, where to buy, etc.
finding help using the Knox Computer Center’s web site
using Filemaker Pro on the network server
    Zimbra calendar

Apparently, responsibility for training in the use of software now rests with the OITS. Nancy and Ross do not train faculty in using software.

  3. A couple of ideas:

Assignments with an e-media component: Student created video and podcasts

ebooks, our e-reference collection: what’s on the horizon, trends in use, etc.

I think we need to think carefully about the content and matching it to the venue. For instance, if we decide to do something with RefWorks, we need to think about doing a demo vs. doing actual training using computers. A RefWorks is less interesting and useful than the actual training. But maybe a RefWorks presentation that describes different ways of using it for specific assignments might be better than a straight demo.

  4. Talked to Vicky and she will be at our meeting tomorrow morning. Generally, she is thinking her session will be on using moodle and/or making podcasts. She is also trying to think of/find possible speakers.

    Session ideas:
    -Integrating library resources in Moodle
-using free audio programs to make podcasts (possibly highlight that you can record your class lectures and post them online)
-using free movie making software to make multi-media projects
-Finding videos to use for class
-Learning styles and Technology (this would probably be more theory/lecture, not demos, so it could be the shorter session)

  5. Oh, thought of another possible session: Technology and Assessment. This could include a brief bit on clickers, using moodle, online surveys/quizzes, using refworks to collect bibs, etc. I kind of like the idea of broader session topics that include a number of resources/ideas within it. But maybe people think that is too much stuff for one session..

  6. Outside speaker idea: Robin Ragan has heard Doug Reilly from Hobart and William Smith Colleges speak about “digital storytelling” at a NITLE conference. The session page is here. From the session website: “Digital technology makes it easy for people to create and share digital images, audio, and video, pushing the storyteller’s art in new directions. So, how can digital storytelling be used for teaching and learning? A panel of faculty who integrate digital stories into their classes will share insights into how to use this technique for more engaging teaching, and ideas to promote deeper learning in their students through alternate methods of communication.” It was part of a larger NITLE series on how faculty members at liberal arts campuses are using digital technology for teaching and learning in a variety of disciplines.
