Change to Remote Access page

Filed under: Uncategorized — Laurie @ 10:32 am

I changed the Alternative Database Access page. I hope I’ve made it clearer in the instructions at the top just how to access databases. For the databases in the list that I had marked as “no remote access available” I put an icon indicating they can be accessed using the proxy server. Also, I made both the ‘key’ icon and the ’server’ icon hot so that you get a pop-up window with instructions.

Reference sources online

Filed under: Uncategorized, Reference sources — Laurie @ 10:39 am

I put the titles from xrefer in the online reference sources web page. I also put in the few titles from LION–I think there are 8 or 9 of them. The titles are in the sections with their call numbers but let me know if I’ve put something in a place where it doesn’t belong. This list will soon become unweildy so I need to work on a better way to present this information using a small database; or perhaps Voyager has better options for us (all of these have MARC records available).

Accessing databases from off campus

Filed under: Databases — Sharon @ 4:32 pm

Here are instructions for 3 methods patrons can use to access Knox Library databases from off campus. These will only work for Knox students, faculty & staff. Method #1 is the simplest, but there are a few databases that are not accessible this way, and it also problemetizes using the Knox linker. For the other two methods, if patrons need help they should call the computer center help desk at 7700 or email them at helpdesker@knox.edu Sharon

Method #1 - Alternative Databases Access Page
1. Go to the library’s homepage : http://library.knox.edu
2. Look for the heading in the middle of the page that reads “Finding Magazine & Journal Articles”
3. Click on the link “Selecting a Journal Database A-Z list” that listed under that heading
4. In the paragraph at the top of the page, look for the link to the “Alternative Database Access” Page and click on it
5. You will be asked for a user name and password - use your regular Knox email username and password. You will only need to enter this at this stage.
6. Then the list of databases will re-appear - and when you click on the links from this page - you will get in. There are a very few that say next to them (remote access unavailable), and these will not work. Everything else will.

One caveat. When you use the “Knox Linker” from one of the databases you’ve accessed this way, and then try to connect to another database from the Knox Linker page - you will not get in. What you’ll need to do is note the information on the Knox Linker page about what database has the article. Then go back to the alternative databases page, connect to the database that way, and search for the article in full text

***CHANGE*** Method #2 - Proxy Server.
Patrons can configure their Internet Browser (i.e. Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox etc.) to access the Internet via the College’s proxy server.
Then their computer will be “on the network” and you will be able to get to all the same things you can at Knox. Documentation for this is available on the Computer center webstie at this link :

http://www.knox.edu/proxy/oc-proxy.html

When they type in this link, they will be asked for their Knox username and password - just to view the instructions. These instructions are **different** than the ones given on the computer web page under “Web Proxy Configuration” - those instructions are for computers ON CAMPUS only. The URL they give there is different.  You must use the URL in this documentation, not what is in the on campus documentation
If they need help with this, they should call or email the help desk 341-7700 / helpdesker@knox.edu

Do not print out the off campus proxy instructions for patrons. The computer center requires that they authenticate themselves to view them.

Method #3 - Use a Dial-up Modem and dial directly into Knox.

Patrons can also get access if they have a dial-up modem rather than a cable modem or DSL. If they dial into Knox, then their computer is on the network.
For PCs - they can go to this URL and read the instructions on the Computer center’s webpage
http://www.knox.edu/x9585.xml

Or go to www.knox.edu, click on “current Students,” click on “libraries and technology,” click on “computer center,” click on “getting connected”, and then click on “Modem access PC”

For Macs - they can go to this URL and read the instructions on the Computer center’s webpage
http://www.knox.edu/x9584.xml

Or go to www.knox.edu, click on “current Students,” click on “libraries and technology,” click on “computer center,” click on “getting connected”, and then click on “Modem access MAC”

If they need help with this, they should call or email the help desk 341-7700 / helpdesker@knox.edu

Changes to ERIC database

Filed under: Databases — Laurie @ 4:17 pm

From OCLC: Changes to the ERIC database will be available Dec. 10, 2006 and are the result of the ERIC producers changing the data they send us. Some new fields have been added; other fields have been discontinued. The new fields apply to new records. ERIC introduced the peer reviewed field in 2005 for journal articles published 2004 onward. Fields that have been discontinued may remain on legacy records but they will not be on new records.

Some of the changes are:

  • Peer-reviewed indicator. This field indicates if a journal is peer-reviewed. It can be searched as an index in the Expert search or used as a limiter.
  • Education level identifies the specific education community for which the resource is intended. This field can be searched.
  • Reference count is the number of references in an article.
  • Major and minor descriptors and major and minor identifiers are no longer distinguished on new records.
