A student sent me an email about a problem in PsycInfo. The problem is this:
In the record in PsycInfo with the Accession number=2005-06118-005 there is a link to the full text to the item in WilsonSelectPlus, but the link to the full text takes you to a page that says the “exact match cannot be found” and gives a list of possible matches, none of which are the article in question.
I was able to find the article for her in a different database, and I asked OCLC support about this:
I do understand about finding the related articles, and, if that’s the case, then why not have the link at the top say “Find related articles” instead of “View full text in pdf format (WilsonSelectPlus).” The link to “View full text…” appears directly under the heading which says GET THIS ITEM, so you can see why I’m asking the question.
OCLC support replied with this:
Our goal is to link the user to the requested full text article as
directly as possible. We do understand that users can be confused when
they get an unexpected return.
We completed a survey with representatives from advisory committee members and other user groups regarding the “Exact Match Not Found” page. The survey results indicated that although this result can be confusing, it can still be of value to users.
The Exact Match Not Found page is returned under these main conditions:
Condition 1 - The full text article is available, but the citation information in the two linked databases had differences that did not allow an exact match. […then they listed examples…]
Condition 2 - The requested full text article is not available for a journal issue.
a) This could happen if full text records from an issue would come into a database in different updates. The Exact Match Not Found page would return the records that were available at the time of linking. As the database that links to the full text is re-run against new full text, matches to new articles may then occur.
b) The Exact Match Not Found page also can be returned when an abstract and index database indexes more articles from a journal issue than may be included in the database which is supplying the full text. The system returns all available articles from that issue.
I did tell OCLC support that this practice is misleading to the user.
The EBSCOhost interface is being redesigned for release this summer. They are calling it EBSCOhost 2.0. Most of the changes are to the ‘look’ of the interface rather than the functionality. The one kind of neat thing they’ve added is what they are calling a search breadcrumb trail: your search terms appear at the top of the results page and you can remove terms and redo your search right from the results page, or, you can redo your search using only one of the terms from this ‘trail’. If you go to http://support.epnet.com/ebscohost2/ you can read about the new features; there’s also a link at the very top to view a flash demo.

I think we need another long meeting this Wednesday. We will probably need to have mostly long meetings this month in order to have the decisions on the databases we renew, or purchase through CARLI made by the end of the month.
Laurie has updated the database spreadsheet in the Library/Reference/Databases folder with current pricing from the CARLI list. She has also indicated the databases that we need pricing from Anne for - to add to that spreadsheet - and this may already have been done or be in process.
Laurie has also sent us the info to link to the whole list to.
So, we need to decide what we want to do at this next meeting and what we want to have done before it : )
To start this process, here is a suggestion for how we might want to start moving on this for the next meeting. Please comment and suggest changes or alternatives by the end of the day Tuesday. Then I’ll send out a more finalized agenda on Tuesday night.
- My suggestion is that we start with our current databases, the ones that we have as “review each year” and the ones that we want to consider platform changes to. So, we should all look at Laurie’s spreadsheet before the meeting, identify these and think about them. People would then come the meeting ready to discuss and/or “vote” on these.
- If at all possible I suggest that Anne and Sharon make sure they have contacted Art & Music (and Ed if Anne was still going to ask about this too) so that we can finalize the decision about switching platforms for those.
- Sharon should complete the draft spreadsheet identifying Budget Line, Invoice responsiblity & management responsibility for databases, Database like periodical package subscriptions, and Subscription based/database like Reference sources.
- I recommend that we hold off on the non CARLI list related stuff for now (ie Rankings).
- I recommend that we use this first meeting just to look at existing databases & changes, and then use the next meeting to talk about possible new additions.
This is meant to just be a suggestion - not an agenda. So, please comment, suggest changes, add your own ideas etc.
Each librarian should add a comment listing and ranking the databases/services/resources that he or she thinks should be listed in the general category of the Subject Databases list.
